Teach First accepts applications from any degree discipline providing around 40% of your degree relates to a National Curriculum subject. We place a special emphasis on recruiting people to fill the subjects in which there is the greatest need in London, North West and Midlands schools: the shortage subjects of Design Technology, English, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Maths and Science.
Teach First participants also teach in the areas of Art, Business Studies, Citizenship, Geography, History, Modern Foreign Languages (MFL), Music and Religious Education (RE). Participants teach at least 40% of their time tables in their degree areas, but may teach one other subject as well.
As part of the application process, you will be asked to choose your preferred teaching subject. You should ensure that you choose a subject that most closely matches the content of your degree course and not just your personal interests. Your suitability to teach this subject will be ascertained from the application form and, should you be made a provisional offer to join the programme, an on-line Subject Knowledge Audit.
When Teach First places participants in schools, we match available vacancies with participants who are eligible to teach in the required subjects. When applying to the Teach First programme we ask you to specify your initial preferences to which region you would like to work in, you cannot at this stage specify which type of school.
At the Assessment Centre stage you will be asked to fill in a regional preference questionnnaire to ascertain in more detail what your requirements are.
Please note, placement is based upon 'greatest educational need'. Whilst preferences are recorded and considered you need to have flexibility to work anywhere within Greater London, North West or the Midlands.
