HRH The Prince of Wales announced as Patron of Teach First |
Teach First – the charity which works with business to recruit the brightest graduates to teach in the UK’s most challenging schools – is delighted to announce that HRH The Prince of Wales has agreed to become its Patron.
The news comes just weeks after the charity’s board agreed an ambitious ten-year strategy, which will see the number of new teachers trained through Teach First more than treble by 2018. The charity will also extend its work into new regions, enabling it to reach more than 250 schools eligible but currently unable to access its support.
Dame Julia Cleverdon DCVO, CBE, Chair of Teach First said:
“We are all thrilled that The Prince of Wales has agreed to become the Patron and to add his voice to those backing Teach First. His interest will be invaluable in raising the profile of our work and mobilising the support we need to achieve our ambitious targets for tackling educational disadvantage.
Having been a vital catalyst at the start of Teach First it is tremendous to have his support as we enter an exciting and crucial new phase of development.”
The Prince’s first engagement as Patron will take place this afternoon (15 July), when he will visit a Tower Hamlets secondary school to celebrate the completion of its first year free of special measures. Bethnal Green Technology College has nine Teach First teachers on its staff, several of whom take leadership positions within the school. Teach First teachers developed a ‘Student Leadership’ scheme for pupils, cited by inspectors as one part of the school’s ‘outstanding progress’ over the last 3 years.
His Royal Highness will participate in a discussion forum with Teach First Ambassadors, examining how Teach First has an impact in transforming schools. He will be joined by Lord Andrew Adonis, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Schools, Tim Loughton, MP, Shadow Minister for Children, Schools and Families, senior business leaders supportive of Teach First and local community and education leaders. |
