What does Teach First provide?

Excellent Teachers
We provide schools with Teach First participants for a two-year teaching commitment. In their first year, our participants are trainee teachers who work a reduced timetable similar to that given to newly qualified teachers (NQTs).  At the end of their first year, our participants gain qualified teacher status (QTS) and continue to work for a second year as NQTs, with the added benefit of having a year of full-time teaching experience in the same school.

Clustering
Teach First participants are clustered in schools in order to help them make a greater impact. We strive to place our participants in groups of four at their schools, so that they can support each other throughout their experience, and so that they can have a collective impact on their school, pupils, and community.

Training for QTS
In partnership with our regional university ITT providers - Canterbury Christ Church University and The University of Manchester - Teach First gives each of our participants training throughout their first year. This training has many aspects, and allows the participants to gain QTS at the end of their first year in schools.

Teach First Professional Tutors
Each Teach First participant receives a professional tutor, hired by the regional university partner, who observes and meets with each participant fortnightly. Additionally, each Teach First participant is assigned a subject tutor, who offers the participant ongoing support through 6 days of subject-specific training throughout the first year.

Coaches

Teach First also provides each participant with a career coach in the third term of their first year of teaching. This Coach is someone from a business or organisation, who helps the participant via meetings and other forms of support. The advice they get from their Coach will help their professional development and thus will help their pupils as well.

Financial Support
In the past the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) has provided financial support for 5% of a school mentor's timetable so that our participants get the support they need from a fellow staff member. We hope that this support will continue in the future.
