The Summer Institute
As a Teach First participant, you will take part in an intensive and highly innovative teacher training programme during the summer, during which you will learn the basic principles of teaching and gain real experience in local schools. This training and professional support is provided by Teach First in partnership with Canterbury Christ Church University, The University of Manchester and Midlands consortium led by Nottingham Trent University.

You will live with other participants in university accommodations whilst you attend initial teacher training (ITT) courses during Week 1 and Weeks 4-6 of the institute.  Additionally you will spend two weeks teaching and learning in schools in your placement region. Evening workshops, panels, and other events supplement the days' activities.

The ITT Courses

The Summer Institute is divided into two main parts: Professional Studies and Subject Studies.  The Professional Studies course covers many topics general to teaching in secondary schools.  From classroom management to body language to special needs, Professional Studies will equip you with the basics you need to start teaching in the Autumn.

During Subject Studies you will learn the skills specific to your subject area. Whether practicing and planning science practicals or developing a new maths game, the work you do in Subject Studies will meet your needs as a subject specialist.
