Sarah was at the height of a successful marketing career when she decided it was time for a change. "…what surprised me is how much I consistently love being in the classroom. When I'm stood in front of a class it brings such a sense of joy, satisfaction and fulfilment .”
Teach First's new Time to Teach programme is for people like Sarah who have already had a career in one sector and now want to take that experience and use it where it can really make a difference – in the classroom.
Time to Teach has been specifically designed for people looking to change careers to become a teacher. Trainee teachers will earn a salary from day one and be fully supported to make the transition to teaching. The training will take place in a school within a commutable distance of their home.
Starting in school in April, trainees will gradually build the skills to enable them to teach an 80% timetable by September, all the while benefiting from the training and support of both Teach First and their placement school. By the end of the 2019/20 school year trainees will have earned their Qualified Teacher Status.
The new programme is being launched this year in the Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire areas, and is looking for talented individuals looking to change their career to teach English, Maths or Science, which are subjects schools are currently struggling to recruit teachers for.
Through the new Time to Teach programme, Teach First are hoping to find many more people like Sarah, “There are too many highlights from term one to mention. I've gone from making very rich people even richer to every day helping prepare young people for their place in the world."
