Get realistic classroom experience
You’ll spend time with pupils from our partner schools. You won’t just be observing a lesson, you’ll be fully involved, getting to know the pupils and getting a chance to work with them.
Get ahead in selection for our Training Programme
Not only will you gain skills that’ll mark you out during selection for our Training Programme, but you'll also be on a fast track towards it.
Build your confidence in teaching
Switching to a whole new career always feels daunting - even more so when the job you're moving into is as important as teaching. Taster is your opportunity to try delivering a lesson in a supported but real environment. You’ll be guided throughout the two days by a fully qualified teacher and you’ll see just how your existing experience can translate into the classroom.
Support young people from disadvantaged backgrounds
Learn how the poorest in society get the least from our education system and meet the pupils whose potential, if fulfilled, could transform society for the better.
Even a few hours meeting someone like you, who can talk them through their future aspirations, can transform a child's life. And if you become a teacher you’ll be changing lives on a daily basis.
Who are Tasters for?
This is for professionals considering a new career direction who graduated two or more years ago. It is exclusive to those eligible to teach Science or Maths on our training programme.
When are they held?
East of England: 20 to 21 January 2020
West Midlands: 9 to 10 March 2020
South East and South Coast: 9 to 10 March 2020
What happens on day one?
Based in one of our partner schools, you will start the day learning more about the context of your school from one of its teachers. You’ll then be in class, seeing teachers in action and picking up top tips for success as a teacher. At the end of the day, with the help of our experts, you will start to prepare to teach a short activity with a real-life class.
Although there’ll be lots of time to get a feel for whether teaching is for you, you won’t be doing it alone. You’ll meet and work with a small group of others considering a change of career.
What happens on day two?
You’ll get the chance to teach a short activity to a class of pupils before getting feedback on your performance from our experts. Then you’ll meet with current teachers who changed career with Teach First and learn more about how we can support you to make the change too.
What if I need to travel to get there?
Don’t worry – we’ll help with the practical stuff so you can focus on getting the most from your two days:
- We’ll cover full travel costs up to £35 and 50% on anything above that up to £70.
- If you live more than 1.5 hours from the location of your school we’ll arrange free accommodation for you.
- We’ll provide all your meals (you can’t teach on an empty stomach!)
