Improving school governance

Improving school governance

Through our Governor Impact Programme, we are working to increase the quality and effectiveness of governing bodies in schools serving low-income communities across the UK. This is an important part of our work to ensure that all young people receive an excellent education, regardless of their background.

How it works

Right now, around 120 of our ambassadors (people who have completed our two-year programme) are volunteering as school governors. Our Governor Impact Programme, in partnership with The Wellcome Trust, ensures that these people are as effective as possible in their roles and can act as catalysts for change within their wider governing body.

The programme will support 25 pairs of ambassador and non-ambassador governors working in low-income schools. As part of their training, each pair of governors will identify a development challenge to improve an aspect of their school, including challenges within specific subjects.

Through workshops and training sessions, mentoring, peer feedback and our online forum, participants are equipped with practical tools to take back to their governing body to improve its effectiveness. They also develop their self-awareness and confidence as a leader, and gain a more in depth understanding of the role that schools governors can play in ending educational inequality.
