Lighting up the classroom one ‘eureka!’ at a time

Stepping into teaching isn’t just about learning how to stand at the front of a classroom – it’s about discovering what you’re capable of. Fatima’s journey from waitress to trainee science teacher on our Training Programme shows how life-changing the right support, training and community can be.

Here, Fatima shares her experience in her own words.

I’ve found the Teach First Training Programme incredibly informative and empowering. I’ve learned so many useful techniques to use in the classroom, built amazing friendships, discovered my passion for teaching, and felt fully supported every step of the way. The journey has really helped me grow both personally and professionally.

One of the highlights was the fully funded Teach First day in York. It was such a fun experience getting to travel outside of London, meet new people, and learn how to deliver practicals in science. It reminded me why I love social, team-based environments and how much joy there is in learning together.

From hospitality to teaching

Summer Institute was honestly such a game-changer for me. Coming from a hospitality background and working as a waitress, I wasn’t sure what to expect stepping into teaching. But the training gave me confidence, hands-on experience, and so many practical skills before starting in school. It helped me understand what I was getting into and made the transition so much smoother.

Building confidence

The support has been outstanding. No matter what question you have, there’s always someone ready to help straight away. At first, teaching a full timetable felt intimidating, but the constant encouragement from my mentor and the Teach First community made it so much easier.

The job can be full-on, but it’s doable, and every day brings something new.

You keep learning, improving, and growing your confidence in the classroom.

Rewarding moments

I love seeing that ‘eureka!’ moment in a science lesson, when something finally clicks for a pupil who once found the topic difficult. It’s such a rewarding feeling.

Science is so fascinating because it connects directly to everyday life – you’re literally teaching them about the world around them. Plus, the practicals are always fun, and they help pupils think creatively and outside the box.

I love seeing that ‘eureka!’ moment.

There have already been so many moments that remind me why I wanted to teach. A pupil once drew a picture of me and gifted it to me; it honestly made my day! Others told me I’m their favourite teacher, even though I’d only just started. Moments like that really touch your heart.

I’ve seen pupils grow in confidence because I break things down and make learning accessible for everyone. Some have started believing in themselves more, and they come to me when they need help – that’s when you realise you’re truly making a difference.

The role of teachers

It’s so important to have great teachers because children spend so much of their lives in school, and what they absorb from us shapes who they become. Teachers don't just deliver lessons; we’re role models, mentors, and supporters in their development.

Teachers don't just deliver lessons; we’re role models.

As a 24-year-old woman with a degree in biomedical science, I’m close enough in age that pupils find me relatable and approachable. I bring energy, humour and empathy into my lessons, and I make a real effort to connect with the class – asking questions about their interests, checking in on them, and getting everyone involved, especially those who don’t usually enjoy science.

Representation matters too. Being a woman in STEM shows my pupils that anyone can succeed in science, regardless of gender or background.

I make sure my lessons are engaging, social, and positive because when pupils enjoy learning, they thrive. My goal is to be that teacher they remember. Someone who made them feel seen, capable, and excited about their own potential.
