Why become a coach?

  • Help guide teachers who serve low-income communities.
  • Get expert training and increase your skills as a coach.
  • Pass on your professional knowledge and develop rewarding relationships.
  • Year-round support and access to our ambassador network.

How it works

We match you with a teacher or school leader, depending on your previous coaching experience.  We welcome both experienced coaches and those new to coaching.

All coaches get specialist training in coaching techniques with our partners Goodfoot and Simms Coaching and Consulting before the programme starts.

You’ll then work with the person you’re coaching over the next year, with regular one-to-one online sessions.

How you can make a difference

Our teachers and school leaders work in schools in low-income communities. As a coach, you can help them make an even greater difference to the lives of deprived children across the England.

Your expertise, time and commitment will help our teachers achieve their personal and professional goals, and address the challenges they face in school.

As a coach, you’ll get:

  • bespoke, high-quality training on a range of professional coaching techniques from experts in the field
  • year-round support and regular newsletters with stories from the coaching community
  • insight into the impact our teachers make and how you’ve helped them achieve this

To be a coach you'll need:

  • over three years’ experience working in a professional setting
  • a desire to learn and develop coaching techniques to support teachers
  • commitment to preparing for and leading regular coaching sessions (dates and times to be agreed with the person you’re coaching)
  • commitment to our vision that education is the most powerful tool to help a child fulfil their potential

I love coaching. The teachers that come onto the Coaching Programme are really committed to their development. They're limited with time, so when they come, they're genuinely invested in using the time effectively.

I feel that coaching is critical. All teachers are leaders and for young people to follow in their footsteps teachers need to be confident, well supported and ready to engage and explore with their pupils.

Teach First teachers are brilliantly supported, but I believe there’s still room for a coach. A neutral space where the individual can work out answers for themselves – whether that’s about leadership challenges, thinking about their next steps etc.
