Summer Institute

Summer Institute is our initial training for the programme. The training is a hybrid of online and in-person learning, which will equip you with the core skills you’ll need in the classroom from September 2026.

You’ll receive an excellent grounding in the key areas of behaviour management, lesson planning, and pupil assessment. You’ll attend online sessions with experts, complete self-directed online learning, and spend time in school, practising the skills you’ve learned in front of real classes.

How is Summer Institute delivered?

Summer Institute can be completed either part-time or full-time and runs over seven weeks.

  • Part-time Institute: 1 June – 19 July 2026
Around 18 hours per week, with a combination of live online sessions and flexible self-directed learning.
  • Full-time Institute: 15 June – 19 July 2026
Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm, combining live online sessions and self-directed study.

Whichever route you complete you’ll:

  • spend five full days in a host school, working on your teaching practice outside of your employment school – we call this school-centred learning
  • spend two full days in your employment school meeting your new colleagues
  • attend in-person events to network and learn alongside other trainees
  • take part in a national in-person event at Northumbria University in Newcastle, bringing trainees together from across the country
  • receive high-quality training that provides you with the knowledge and skills you need to set you up for success

Some in-person elements will require full-time availability. We’ll share further details about dates, locations, and travel or accommodation support at the relevant point in the year.

We’ll be in touch at the relevant point in the year to ask which version you’d prefer, so start considering now what would work best for you. Places for each version may be capped depending on demand for each model, so please respond promptly when asked for your preference.

School Readiness Day

Before starting in your employment school, you’ll take part in a School Readiness Day. This is a full day of live online training designed to help you feel confident and prepared for your first weeks in school. Further details will be shared closer to the time.
