Ending educational inequality
Closing the gap and opening doors for our nation's children.
Education has the power to transform lives. Yet for too many children, the opportunities they have access to are still shaped by the circumstances they are born into. An attainment gap of around 18 months remains between the richest and poorest pupils, with the effects of disadvantage continuing long after young people leave school.
Drawing on evidence from schools, teachers and sector research, Ending Educational Inequality explores the barriers facing children and young people today – from rising poverty and increasing pressure on children's services to the growing challenges of teacher recruitment and retention. It also highlights what works and sets out practical, evidence-based recommendations to help ensure every child can fulfil their potential.
The report calls for action in three key areas: investing in the teaching workforce, targeting support where it is needed most, and developing a cross-government strategy to tackle the wider drivers of educational inequality.
