Our selection process

Our selection process

Our selection process is clearly structured. When you’ve submitted your online application we’ll let you know within ten working days whether you’re invited to the next stage, our development centre in London.

Application form
We look for specific competencies throughout our application process, from your online application form onward. Understanding them, and applying them properly, can go a long way towards a successful application.

Our development centre
Our development centre is located at our London office. On the day you attend you'll have a competency-based interview, take part in a group exercise and deliver a pre-prepared seven-minute lesson.

The selection day at our development centre is the beginning of our investment in you. Unlike an assessment centre, it’s not just about the skills you have right now – it’s an opportunity to demonstrate your potential to learn and develop further.

You’ll be given actionable feedback throughout that will help you improve your performance – immediately and in the longer term. Although the focus is on your development, it is a selection day. This means we’ll select participants for the programme based on the behaviours and potential you demonstrate on the day.

Provisional offer
If you’re successful at our development centre, you’ll receive a provisional offer for our Leadership Development Programme within three weeks. Your offer will be for a particular local area and curriculum area. You’ll need to complete some work to have your offer confirmed.

Confirmed offer
Once your offer has been confirmed you can start preparation for Summer Institute - our intensive five-week training programme. In the meantime, we’ll work to match you with a school; this process takes time, and being matched can happen anytime up to, or even during, Summer Institute.

Apply early to avoid missing out
We recruit on a rolling basis and fill our vacancies as soon as we find candidates that meet our competencies and academic requirements. This means that the most popular subjects fill up very early, so we recommend that you apply as soon as possible.

Our recruitment team are here to help and keep you informed every step of the way, so if you're ever unsure of the next stage then don't hesitate to get in touch at recruitment@teachfirst.org.uk.
